Un-social networking?

The very definition of 'social networking' seems to be undergoing a drastic change.

Thanks to the popular 'social' networks online, people now seem to be getting more and more complacent about staying in touch with old friends and making newer ones.

While it might be great to be connected with all your friends and acquaintances through online social networks, they are hardly much of a replacement for the qualitatively richer face-to-face interactions, meetings and get-togethers (unless, of course, those are anyway not possible due to distance issues and / other issues!)

No offence to fans of social networks, please go ahead and socialize with orkut, facebook, myspace and the scores of other networks out there.

As for me, I'd prefer a real hug anyday over a virtual facebook hug!

New Year Resolutions and Social Media

One of my New Year Resolutions for 2011 was to start another blog.

Since I tend to tweet and blog excessively about social media, I decided to write a separate blog about my social media rants. So here it is. If you're interested in my social media rants, subscribe here.

Gurupurab

Guru Purab means 'festival of the Guru' and denotes the Birthday of Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith. Besides being the founder of the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak was also a great poet, philosopher, humanist and a powerful social reformer, a teacher of mankind.

Guru Nanak also attacked the vicious tentacles of corruptions in society. He strongly protested against formalism and ritualism and carried the message of peace and of love to everybody. He was very liberal in his views and tried his level best to rid people of superstitous beliefs. Also, he firmly believed that there are no barriers of race, class, caste, creed or color which check the progress of any in reaching the goal. He realized the great truth of the brotherhood of religions and preached the universal brotherhood of man.

A beautiful summary of his teachings is contained in one of his hymns:

Love the saints of every faith:
Put away thy pride.
Remember the essence of religion
Is meekness and sympathy,
Not fine clothes,
Not the Yogi's garb and ashes,
Not the blowing of the horns,
Not the shaven head,
Not long prayers,
Not recitations and torturings,
Not the ascetic way,
But a life of goodness and purity,
Amid the world's temptations.

Gurupurab is the most important festival of the Sikh calendar and is celebrated with great zeal by Sikhs from all over the world.

The sweet, the sour and the sarcastic!

According to a Live Science Journal article, 'Sarcasm' is now seen as an important evolutionary skill. Evolutionary theorists claim that as social beings, sarcasm may have helped us climb the ladder to survival.

I think all forms of humor make the world a better place. Thank God for making us capable of expressing and understanding sarcasm as one of them!

If it wasn't for sarcasm, our lives would have been somewhat too sweet!
